The Voyage
Across the sculpture’s positive space, a unified representation of the New Zealand landscape is created by a dramatic momentum that builds in the back of the artwork.
With the strategic use of UV light, the sculpture’s interior illuminates, unveiling its enigmatic presence. This interplay of light and form grants the sculpture an ethereal allure, inviting viewers to ponder the depths of its artistic narrative and cultural significance.
A testament to the artist’s heritage and inspired by his cultural roots, Maori artist James Molnar collaborates on this artwork through his designs.
The initial spark of inspiration for The Voyage occurred during Javier's visit to Copenhagen, where he encountered awe-inspiring artworks that left a lasting impression on him. The experience sparked a flurry of sketches as he began to explore novel concepts and experiment with ideas. Among the many notions that captured his imagination, the ingenious use of light and translucent materials became an obsession.
Gradually, a vision took shape—a harmonious fusion of contemporary allure and traditional essence. The foundational concept depicted the sculpture much as it stands in its final form: a raw elongated chunk of mineral meticulously transformed into a waka on one side, while the interplay of light reveals a hidden dimension within the artwork.
